KOOTHAMBALAM, established in Chennai in 1966 have been shifted to Coimbatore in 1995. Founder Natyacharya (late) S.Aravindan, an Alumini of late Rukmini Devi’s Kalakshetra is a multifaceted personality, a recipient of titles like Natyakalarathnam, Natyakalathilakam, Kavi, Nalladal nanmani, Natyacharya & Natanakulapathi. He is the author of the book ‘Bharathanatyopadesini’ & his book Natya Padalgal is a wonderful compilation of his unique compositions. His disciples have established the branches of koothambalam in the U S A, Netherlands, Singapore, Srilanka, Kanpur, Banglore & Chennai. Koothambalam endeavours to instill in its students, through the medium of natya, the important qualities of self discipline and persistence, traits that will help focus their mind in all walks of life. For the students Koothambalam Is Home Away From Home.
A mother, friend, confidante and teacher Kala Aacharya Guru Smt.Vasantha Aravindan is as popular with her students for her love and patience as she is with the outside world for her graceful dance, innovative choreography and song compositions for Natya. Trained in four classical dance forms viz. Bharathanatyam, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattam & Kathakali, she has received the Best Teacher award from Natyanjali trust Chennai, the Kalaimagal award from Grasim creations,Raj Tv. She has been honoured with a title Kala Aacharya by Viswam fine arts, Chennai. She has conduct workshops in Mohiniyattam and Bharathanatyam in the USA and helps her students around the world to continue to learn and practice through Skype. Recently she has done lec-dem organized by Ministry of Culture,Govt of India at IIT Kanpur.
Smt.Saathvika Aravindan, daughter and disciple of the Aravindans is also a dance teacher, choreographer, nattuavanar and Joint director of this institution. She is trained in 3 classical art forms viz. Bharathanatyam, Mohiniyattam & Kuchipudi. To her credit, she has performed in various prestigious dance festivals and won many laurels.
